Home-based businesses in Spring Hill have special needs. The city regulates allowed uses within the residential area. The requirements are outlined in Section 17.336 of the zoning ordinance pages 97 through 99 -- which actually begins on page 9 of the Adobe file. Whether you are a new or an existing business, there are several resources and publications that might be of assistance to you.

County Economic Research Institute Inc. -- CERI was established in 1986 as a department of Johnson County government and became a non-profit corporation in 1994. Its mission is to support the economic development of Johnson County, the Kansas City metropolitan area, and the state of Kansas through the provision of data and technical assistance. 

Kansas Department of Commerce -- As the lead agency for economic development in Kansas, Kansas Department of Commerce works to foster economic development through the promotion of business, commerce, and industry. This is accomplished through the Department's six divisions, along with a network of business assistance providers throughout the state. Those divisions include: Administration, Agriculture Products Development Division, Business Development Division, Community Development Division, Trade Development Division and Travel & Tourism Development Division. The Department offers several publications. Perhaps the two most helpful ones are "Starting a Business in Kansas" and the "Steps to Success - A Guide to Starting a Business in Kansas." Information about these publications is available on the Internet.

Kansas Labor Market Information -- The Kansas Department of Human Resources' Labor Market Information Services provides an overview of the market, wages and their trends.

Kansas League of Municipalities -- The League works to unify, strengthen, and advocate for the interests of Kansas municipalities to advance the general welfare and promote the quality of life of the residents. Established by municipal officials in 1910, the League of Kansas Municipalities is a voluntary, nonpartisan federation of over 500 Kansas cities.

Kansas Revenue Department -- A list of city and county sales tax rates and the local jurisdiction code book is available in the portable document format and as a Microsoft Excel file.

KCSourceLink -- This online service networks resource providers in the Kansas City region that offer business-building services for small business success. KCSourceLink makes it easy for aspiring, emerging and existing small business owners to find the right resource at the right time.

MetroData Line -- Data on the region's population, economy, social characteristics, and other areas, as well as maps of the region.  It includes indicators that can be used to measure the progress of individual communities as well as the entire metropolitan area, including employment, education, income, crime, housing, births and deaths. 

SBA (US Small Business Administration) -- SBA has numerous programs and services designed to help small businesses succeed. They can also be contacted at 1-800-U-ASK-SBA.The Kansas City area office can be reached at (816) 374-6380. The agency offers an on-line start up guide to help new business owners work through the process of starting a firm.

SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) -- A nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE volunteers provide free, confidential face-to-face and email business counseling to America’s entrepreneurs. Counseling and workshops are offered at 389 chapter offices across the country.
